When to Choose Adult Day Services

With the aging of the our nation’s population, everyday more and more of us are faced with the with the possibility that a loved one can no longer properly care for themselves. What do you do? Where do you turn? When do you make the decision? Following are some guidelines to consider when faced with such a decision (From the Virginia Adult Day Services Association - Revised 4/26/06):
Adult day services may be an option when your relative:
- Needs help in self-care
- Requires supervision
- Is socially isolated and lonely
- Is mentally confused
- Is unable to manage personal care and hygiene
- Needs good nutrition
- Requires medical supervision and care
- Is prone to wander
- Needs stimulation
- Needs a quality of life despite disability/illness
- Needs assistance with life skills
- Needs temporary placement
- Has a family or caregiver who needs support and a break from care responsibilities
Guidelines for choosing a qualified adult day center:
- The center is licensed by the state
- The center’s staff and personnel are qualified and trained in human services with ongoing continuing education
- The participant-staff ratio is at least 1:6 with higher degree of supervision preferred
- Participants are assessed and activities provided to meet the needs that are identified
- The recreation program is well planned and has a variety of activities for both the individual and groups
- The environment is clean, attractive, and stimulated
- The philosophy of the center promotes dignity and compassionate care
- Personal care assistance is provided
- Safety is safeguarded through security system and monitoring
- Volunteers support the staff, not replace the staff
- Family members and caregivers are involved in the center
- Counseling and support are provided to the family
- Medications are monitored and tracked
- Nursing services and health care monitoring are provided every day
- The facility has minimal service violations in health and licensing standards and has a plan of correction
- Each participant has an individualized plan of care
